EBSCO Publishing continues to refine and enhance the EBSCOhost® version of CINAHL® including the recent addition of Searchable Cited References for over 800 journal titles in the database. This new functionality is available exclusively via the EBSCOhost implementation of CINAHL.

Searchable Cited References provide a powerful means for extending research by allowing users to locate additional information related to an article of interest. Sometimes referred to as Reference Linking, this functionality lets users link directly from a particular article to other articles cited in the bibliography of the original article. It also allows users to link directly from a particular article to other articles in the database that cite the original article. The basic principle associated with this type of linking considers that if a particular article is of interest to a researcher, then the articles cited by that same article, or that cite the article, are often of value as well. Searchable Cited References can be used to augment more traditional approaches to literature searching; as tools to analyze research activity; to identify original publications in which an idea or concept was discussed; to compare user behavior today with user behavior several years ago; to trace the chronology of events, relationships among them, and their relative importance; and to provide access to interdisciplinary literature and to reveal papers relevant to a subject not found by using conventional indexes.

The EBSCOhost version of CINAHL also includes PreCINAHL™ as a companion database for subscribers. PreCINAHL provides current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject indexing) that is available to researchers only while these articles are being indexed. This enables users to gain access to article citations that otherwise would not be available. Once the bibliographic records are complete, they are added to the CINAHL database and removed from PreCINAHL. Once again, this companion database is only available from EBSCO.
