EBSCO Quickly Becoming Leading Provider of Medical Databases
Suite of EBSCOhost® Medical Databases Substantially Increases

IPSWICH, Mass. — May 21, 2006 — Through a combination of proprietary database development, database & content licensing, and key acquisitions, EBSCO Publishing has positioned itself to become the new leader in providing database content for biomedical research, including resources for use at the point-of-care.

"EBSCO is the world's largest intermediary between publishers and libraries," Melissa Kenton, Vice President of Publisher Relations for EBSCO Publishing, explains. "We don't publish medical journals that compete with journals published by the leading medical publishers. We have a tradition of working with publishers for over 60 years as a subscriptions agent, and, as a result, publishers view EBSCO as the natural partner for aggregated databases."

EBSCO offers the world's most complete access to full-text medical journals, as well as a suite of proprietary patient information and evidence-based clinical resources. As a result of its position with publishers and the growing collection of medical databases, EBSCO offers hospitals, libraries and other medical facilities the ability to:

  • Select and purchase individual e-journals and publisher packages, and...
  • Complement those purchases with EBSCOhost® full text databases, which round out library journal collections by adding access to many journals that were previously unattainable
According to Kim Stam, Director of Content Licensing for EBSCO Publishing, "Full-text databases are a necessary supplement to journal subscriptions, but they are not a viable replacement. EBSCOhost databases provide users with article-level linking from EBSCOhost search results to online journal content through any platform." (When EBSCO is used for e-journal subscriptions, the maintenance of these links is automatic.)

Linking arrangements and other partnerships were keys to enabling EBSCO to create the world's most comprehensive collection of medical content:

  • EBSCO partners with PubMed to provide links from PubMed's MEDLINE® to the full text in EBSCO databases (for subscribing libraries). Furthermore, EBSCO now offers the database MEDLINE® with Full Text, which provides integrated full text access to nearly 1,200 journals indexed in MEDLINE.
  • EBSCO partners with Wiley to provide the Cochrane Collection via EBSCOhost
  • EBSCO is the only vendor to offer all databases from the American Psychological Association (PsycINFO®, PsycARTICLES®, PsycBOOKS™, PsycCRITIQUES™ & PsycEXTRA®)
  • EBSCO offers the world's largest full text companion for PsycINFO: Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection
  • EBSCO produces the world's most comprehensive full text database for health administrators: Health BusinessElite
  • EBSCO now owns Health Library™, a major patient information resource for hospitals
  • EBSCO now owns CINAHL®, the definitive index for nursing & allied health literature. Full text versions of this database are currently available only from EBSCO, and the CINAHL database itself will soon be available exclusively through the EBSCOhost platform (i.e. no other vendors will provide access to CINAHL).
  • EBSCO now owns SPORTDiscus™, the definitive index for sports & sports medicine literature, and also provides SPORTDiscuswith Full Text
  • EBSCO now provides access to a medical images database from Nucleus Medical (SMART Imagebase)
  • EBSCO now owns DynaMed™, the only evidence-based, point-of-care resource proven to answer most clinical questions in primary care
  • EBSCO now offers GIDEON, the world's premier global infectious diseases database
