EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) is pleased to announce the addition of a dedicated thesaurus
to the Communication & Mass Media Complete™ (CMMC) database available via
EBSCOhost®. The new Communication Thesaurus was developed by EBSCO
with the intent of providing benefits similar to those afforded by other highly-specialized
database thesauri, such as that available within PsycINFO® and Business
Source Premier®.
CMMC continues to offer an unparalleled collection of more than 230 full text journals related
to the study of communication and other associated disciplines. This content is further
complemented and supported by the unsurpassed indexing that the database provides. The
highly detailed bibliographic records that serve as the foundation of CMMC's indexing
include such essential items as Author-Supplied Keywords, NAICS/Industry codes, Author
Affiliations, and Searchable Cited References. Enhanced access is facilitated in part
by the specialized terms provided by the Communication Thesaurus for use as subject
headings in CMMC. The Communication Thesaurus also functions as a searchable authority
file providing researchers with another powerful means of searching CMMC (in addition to
keyword, journal name, browsable indices, and other available modes of searching).
About the Communication Thesaurus
With over 7,300 terms specifically related to the study of communication and associated
disciplines, the new Communication Thesaurus helps to further tailor the research
environment of CMMC to meet the specific needs of its users. A foundation set of
Library of Congress subject headings was expanded upon using over 80 additional resources
to create this comprehensive, subject-specific thesaurus. To further ensure that it meets
the expectations of researchers, the Communication Thesaurus was constructed in accordance with
NISO standards regarding thesaurus development (ANSI/NISO Z39.19). Such attention to detail
in the creation of the thesaurus allows CMMC to provide users with the means to easily locate
the high-quality full text content that is specifically related to their individual research needs.
About CMMC
Communication & Mass Media Complete, like Communication & Mass Media Index, provides
the most robust, quality research solution in areas related to communication and mass
media. CMMC incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication
Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with
numerous other journals to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and
depth in the communication and mass media fields. CMMC offers cover-to-cover ("core") indexing
and abstracts for over 300 journals, and selected ("priority") coverage of over 100 more, for a
combined coverage of over 400 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for more
than 230 journals. EBSCO's closest competitor with regard to full text communication journals
provides access to less than 50 of the same titles covered by CMMC. Many major journals have
indexing, abstracts, PDFs and searchable cited references from their first issues to the
present (dating as far back as 1915). CMMC contains a sophisticated controlled vocabulary
and comprehensive reference browsing (i.e. searchable cited references for peer-reviewed journals
covered as "core"). To further develop and enhance this database, EBSCO has established two
working groups of expert advisors represented by leading librarians, bibliographers, and professionals
in the areas of communication and mass media.
